Gilberto Borges released the first published version of “Musix Brazil 2.0 Live-CD, this time in beta 3 stage derived from Knoppix 6.1 “Adriane”.
You can download it from codigolivre.org.br (586.8 mb), (md5sum).
Supported languages: English and Portuguese from Brazil, but you can install any other language using apt-get or synaptic.
Musix Brazil it is lighter than Musix 2.0 Live-DVD based on Debian-Live, it uses only the Openbox WM with the LXDE desktop. The apps derived from Debian Lenny + SID so we got a very updated system, the audio plugins processing in real time are fine, Audacity has been greatly improved in the latest version, for example, it can handle 10 channels of the soundcard M-Audio Delta 1010 and any other mixer.
There are still important pieces to add, this is the case of the control panel MusixControl developed by Gilberto Borges, which is being optimized to be lighter, more efficient and attractive, and even to run in text mode without the need for powerful graphics system.
Adriane Knoppix has been chosen as the basis for Musix Brazil and removed all the non-free software that may contain (although it remains to remove the blobs from the kernel), considering limited resources and systems in use in educational establishments. One advantage of Adriane Knoppix has to do with the tools for the disabled, such as people with low vision or blind.
Musix Brazil tries to go beyond the field of music to perform a proper system for the reality of education in Latin America, being a special series of Musix GNU/Linux.
It includes several packages for audio processing and music creation such as hydrogen, Ardour, Audacious, Audacity, seq24, csound, puredata, rezound, qjackctl, qsynth, rosegarden, jack-rack, jack-tools, jackd, jackeq or jamin.
The Linux kernel was compiled with Preemption enabled, so you can achieve audio processing in real time as root user, but still does not have the low latency patch for enabling a user without administrator privileges to run JACK in real time. You can install any realtime patched kernel when the system is installed on HD.
To achieve a more appropriate kernel we will need to build a new module as Knoppix “Adriane” was developed using aufs and unionfs.
We thank the users of free software for testing this version. Cheers!
